The Amazing Spider-Man the Movie (2012) is really based on the recent re-imagining of the character found in the series Ultimate Spider-Man. The series was published by Marvel Comics from 2000 to 2009. This re-imagining was one of many books in the Ultimate franchise. Ultimate Spider-Man exists in a universe where there are new versions of the X-Men, The Fantastic Four and a new group called the Ultimates.
All of Spider-Man's usual enemies are back in the Ultimate Spider-Man. However, there are some differences; Venom's human host, Eddie Brock is a childhood friend of Peter Parker. I guess it adds to the drama of the relationship if they have more history.
The comic series spawn a television show and now a movie.
